The Making of the Book
Josefa Beyer spent two years canvassing Indianapolis for 200 oral history narrators--past and present students, parents and guardians representing a range of neighborhoods, ages and ethnic and income groups. She then edited 100 school memoirs to their most readable essence while preserving each storyteller’s cadence and truth. The result is a very Studs-Terkel-like mix of chapters ranging in length from one to ten pages. Its highly accessible stories will inspire readers to think, laugh, cry and remember; to confront prejudice and social and economic isolation; and to ask why students and parents don’t have more voice in their schools.
